Beat Insomnia The Old Fashioned Way

Sleepless in... Arizona?

I have noticed on a number of occasions I too suffer from insomnia. After a few nights of it I realize what is different about this particular week as opposed to one a few weeks prior when I was sleeping 'like a baby'. Diet and exercise.

Sleeping like the dead...

Diet & Excersise

I know, I know, we are all tired of hearing the same things about everything that ails us, but it's true. If I skip breakfast or have a fast food lunch or something similarly not so high on the nutritional value scale and don't get my afternoon workout in, i probably won't sleep well. At least that is the pattern that I tend to have. When I do sleep in these conditions I notice that my sleep tends to be frequently interrupted. I don't get that restful sleep that just feels so great to wake-up from.

The Food Log

Something that helps me to eat well is keeping a food log to keep track of the calories, fat, carbs, etc. By doing this I consciously cut down on some of the junk like cakes, candy-bars and the like, which tend to fuel my body in ways I do not need. There is a nice web resource that I use for this called SparkPeople

Gym Time

As far as working out, I have a job that includes a gym membership so I make it a point to take full advantage of it. Getting a friend/partner for racquetball, tennis or any other cardio intensive sport is a great way to unload some stress and burn off a little energy.

At the end of the day for me it comes down to eating decent (not perfect, that's no fun) and doing a little to wear myself out. Maybe I sleep well just because I worked off that afternoon snack in the gym.

There's a little food for thought for you.

It's true! If I work out in the morning, I'm done by the time 10 p.m. comes around :)
